Exmoor has a long history with wild creatures, such as the famous Beast of Exmoor, and one of the best places you can enjoy the wild side of North Devon is Exmoor zoo. Recognised as one the “West-country’s hidden gems”, the zoo is located on the edge of the prestigious National Park. It is a unique rural zoo set in a valley, with brilliant rare and unusual animals such as binturong and tayra. They also have the family favourites like meerkats, lemurs and the Big Cats.
Alongside just walking round the zoo and observing the wonderful animals, the zoo runs interactive sessions and wildlife encounters at various points throughout the day. This includes feeding wallabies, petting a selection of animals, and meeting the alpacas up close.
The BIG Sheep
Building on the theme of wildlife, The Big Sheep is the place to go if you are looking for a guaranteed day of family fun. An award-winning family attraction that has been welcoming families for over 30 years, the Big Sheep is one of North Devon’s friendliest attractions. When you visit you can fill your time with their adrenaline-fueling rides, fun shows that they put on, brilliant animals that you can approach, as well as a chance to have fun with indoor soft play.
Keypitts Offroad Adventures
Building on the theme of adrenaline, Keypitts Offroad Adventures is the place to visit if you want some exhilaration. They are located at an activity centre in Ilfracombe and offer a selection of fun activities such as off-road quad biking, archery and their 4×4 Land Rover Experience.
Run by a local family since 1998, they have a long history as a place where everyone in the family can have fun in a safe environment. Tap into your dreams of being Robin Hood at archery, or enjoy negotiating the 200 acres of challenging terrain in their Land Rover experience; whatever activity you want to do, you and the rest of your family will have a great time.
The weather in North Devon isn’t always brilliant, so there is a need to have an all weather attraction to go to, and the Ilfracombe Aquarium is that place.
An award winning aquarium that has recently been enhanced with some exciting new exhibits, as well as their already existing displays of over 75 species. Separated into a number of zones, the aquarium shows off a selection of brilliant aquatic animals from a local Exmoor stream to an Exotic ocean location from the other side of the world. Your children will be engaged with fun trails and quizzes as you walk around the aquarium.
