The Frequent Traveller’s Typical Morning Ritual

It happens even to those of us who travel quite frequently and are in a sense always on the road, how you wake up in the morning and for a split second or two, you’ve actually totally forgotten where exactly it is you are! This is just one of quite a few kick-starters of the frequent traveller’s typical morning ritual though.

Reaching for Your Phone

Unless you have to be somewhere at a specific time, you’re not likely to set an alarm to wake you up in the morning while you’re away on your travels. So the likelihood is that after your little episode of not quite knowing where you are and how you got there, the first thing you’d do is reach for your phone, perhaps to check the time, amongst other things.

Most frequent travellers lodge at the likes of backpackers’ hostels, so whatever it is you do in the morning to break out of your sleepy trance and get ready for the day all feels a bit rehearsed. You cannot help but feel like there’s a camera on you all the time, so rituals such as cleaning out your nose are saved for when your turn to use the bathroom comes around.

One thing you cannot help but do as part of your morning ritual however is that of reminiscing on the events of the trip so far, from perhaps your encounters on the flight to anything fun you might have got up to the previous day. Many budding travellers may not know this, but these are the little moments which actually make each trip. This is what is meant by the impact of what you get up to while on your travels sticking with you forever and giving you the eternal gift of all the memories you make.

Planning Your Day According to a Theme

After you’ve had your morning shower, the planning of your day starts, even if in many instances the plan unfolds rather spontaneously. Spontaneously unfolding events are always the best, but generally one does indeed develop some sort of plan, often with the help of whoever it is who runs the hostel or perhaps some of the locals you might have met.

However, whether you actually plan your events to the tee or indeed if they unfold spontaneously, a common theme generally makes for a rather invisible part of the frequent traveller’s morning ritual. You only really notice it once somebody points it out.

For example, we once rolled with a full-time professional sports bettor through a couple of countries across Southeast Asia. This bloke showed us where we could download The Official William Hill Android App he was using to place his bets and keep an eye out on the results to see if he’s made any money.

What I noticed though is that the rest of his day’s plans pretty much revolved around finding something with a sporty theme to engage in, which had me wondering just what theme my morning ritual follows and for the life of me I still haven’t figured it out yet.
